International Women's Day
We, The Unmooring, were founded by women, run by women, and we amplify women’s writing and art drawn from their Christian faith.
For centuries, women have been relegated by various Christian traditions and Church structures to passive roles. There have always been exceptions, and the bravery of the women before us—in the early church, the saints, martyrs, activists, leaders, writers, musicians—give us the strength to continue working towards an equal voice and acceptance of women’s many spiritual gifts, including in leadership, influence and service through roles often reserved for men, in broader Christian church traditions.
To every mother, daughter, sister, caretaker—you are so loved by the God Who Sees, who is with you even in the dark moments and dark places. We are with you and for you and praying alongside you for strength, for hope, for every dream of love and safety and peace and comfort.
The below prayer was written by Reverend Rosemary Frew of the Church of Scotland for International Women’s Day:
On this International Women's Day,
as we celebrate and give thanks for the achievements of women,
we remember the women who have played a part in our lives.
Those who have
nurtured us,
taught us,
inspired us,
loved us.
Forgive us when we have limited women
through inequality,
by stereotype,
by exclusion,
through lack of opportunity.
On this International Women's Day,
as we acknowledge the challenges women still face,
we pray that all women may know equality
of healthcare,
of education,
of wealth,
of prospects.
We pray that all women may know themselves to be
respected,
safe,
included,
empowered.
We ask these things in the name of Jesus
in whom there is neither male nor female.
Amen.
